Morale for the staff gets destroyed by less communication, less empathy, and less effective treatments. Co-workers of those who have taken this path may view it differently. Quietly quitting is the way to get by, keep a paycheck coming in, keep health insurance, etc.

Surviving the past three years has led to depression and compassion fatigue, not to mention the post-traumatic stress that has been endured. Why hire more staff when financially we can make up the financial loss by surviving with what we already have? This practice has led nurses in all aspects of healthcare to retire, quit their current positions, or leave the profession as a whole. Hospitals throughout the United States and beyond say they are struggling financially, causing workloads to increase. While there has been a nursing shortage due to the baby boomer workforce retiring, it has only snowballed. COVID-19 has now led to exhaustion, burnout, and bitterness in those who survived it. Without the resources to take care of ourselves, the space to decompress, or the time to do it, our morale was obliterated.

However, having it occur in healthcare can be deadly, not only for the hospitals’ morale but for the patients that depend on them.ĭuring the pandemic, nurses were viewed as healthcare heroes for their patients, but in turn, were not heroes to themselves. This has been seen in an array of occupations, not solely in health care. Going to work every day, doing what is minimally required of your position, and doing nothing more than that. Lately, a lot has been published on social media platforms such as TikTok about the concept of “quiet quitting.” While it is not a new concept, it has gained much traction, especially in the aftermath of COVID and it is happening at the bedside! “Quiet Quitting” used to be referred to in previous decades, as “Quit and Stay.” Essentially this means being emotionally disconnected from your job and doing the bare minimum to keep it.
